Director Mohammad Rasoulof was originally scheduled to participate in the 2023 Cannes Film Festival as a member of the Un Certain Regard section jury. However, he was arrested in July 2022 after criticizing the government’s crackdown on protesters in the southwestern Iranian city of Abadan over a fatal building collapse. On May 8, 2024, Rasouloff’s lawyer announced that he had been sentenced to eight years in prison, as well as whipping, a fine, and confiscation of his property. On May 12, 2024, Rasouloff announced that he had escaped from Iran and was staying at an unknown location in Europe. On May 24, 2024, Rasouloff attended the film’s Cannes premiere and held up photos of two of the film’s actors, Soheila Golestani and Missagh Zareh, on the red carpet. A country that does not treat its citizens as free and responsible human beings, and in particular violates the rights of women, represents to me a backward culture, regardless of what insiders may perceive in terms of credibility an honest account of how the regime and religion present in every level of society can lead people to irrational actions. It is also interesting to see how young people in Iran are standing up for themselves and demanding more freedom – which they are not getting. It is sad to see how wide the gap is between parents when it comes to obedience to government and devotion to God. It is true that in the end the film contains perhaps too much fantasy and drama, but overall I found it interesting to watch despite its considerable length.
